Cachaca is a distilled spirit that was "born and raised" in the early 1500's in the beautiful country of Brazil! Cachaca is made from the distillation of fermented Sugar Cane Juice, and it's a process that Brazil has refined into an art form over the centuries!
Absolutely! You can likely find Cachaca at the same store you buy your other liquors and spirits! If you normally shop at a retail liquor/spirit store, you would want to start your search in the Rum section, as Cachaca typically doesn't have it's own section/shelf. If your local store of choice doesn't have it, you can always ask what options they have for placing a "Special Order". In Pennsylvania, for example, most stores that have Cachaca, only have 1-3 brands in stock. But on their official state website, there are some more options to choose from! And then you can also find other websites that also have home delivery options.
Cachaca is similar to other Spirits/Liquors, such as Rum, Tequila, Vodka, and so on, in the sense that there are many ways to drink it! If you are a person that enjoys sipping a high-end tequila or scotch or whiskey, then if you buy a high-end cachaca, you may find that you enjoy drinking cachaca in it's natural form! But of course, you can also make some amazing cocktails with Cachaca! The national drink of Brazil is called a Caipirinha, for short, you can just call it a "Caipi"(pronounced KAI-PEE)!! The ingredients are simple, it's ice, muddled lime, sugar, and cachaca! And then there are hundreds of other mix options, and of course, we hope you check out our VIDEOS, as we will walk you through our favorite ways to drink Cachaca!
Most cachaca's are going to be about 40 percent alcohol, ie, 80 proof. Of course, some cachaca's will even push closer t0 50 percent alcohol, so you may find some that are closer to 100 proof.
Cachaca tastes like... Cachaca! No but really, it does have it's own unique flavor profile, but we prefer to say that it's somewhere in the Vodka / Rum / Tequila spectrum. Now, there are aged cachaca's that actually taste closer to whiskey or bourbon, and these cachaca's are more for "sipping" and drinking as-is. But the majority of cachaca's that you will find in the United States will be Cachaca's that you'll likely be using in a mixed drink / cocktail.
Generally, here in America, you'll see cachaca at the cheapest around $10, and the majority of Brands/options will be in the $20-$30 range. In some respects, cachaca is priced similarly to Vodka. Your entry-level vodka's tend to be in that $10-$15 range (like Smirnoff and Pinnacle), then you've got some mid-level options around the $20 mark (like Tito's), and then your premium options start around $28-$33 range (like Belvedere/Grey Goose), and of course, you'll find a few ultra-premium options that go up in price from there (like Crystal Head). So in general, you may find some cachaca's that are under $20, but if you want to be "better safe than sorry" from a taste perspective, shoot for a Cachaca that is in the "$20 and up" category. The options here in America aren't super robust, but there are enough brands and varieties to turn YOU into a Cachaca Super-Fan!
